How to Catch Squid!

Squid fishing Nantucket sound (5/6/18). Squid fishing was hot and heavy in the sound today. You can drift to locate them and then anchor once they're found. Look for 10-20 feet of water. Fish a standard high low rig with a weighted (2oz) squid at the bottom and a weightless jig roughly 18" above. All colors worked but they seemed to be keyed in a little bit more on whites, pinks and yellows. A 20-25 lb mono leader is strong enough to lift the squid into the boat without parting your line. Using a braid main Line will help you detect strikes easier. Drop your rig to the bottom and slowly jig up and down. If you run into weedy bottom and can't keep your lower jig clean, swap it out with some sort of sinker. Start reeling with steady pressure once you feel them strike, no need for a dramatic hook set.

Side note- once you get home, fill a pump sprayer with bleach and spray down your boat. Give it a few minutes and then rinse the boat with soap and water. The stubborn ink should wash right off.

Tight lines and enjoy the calamari!
